Rumson Arbor Day 2020 Celebration

Happy Arbor Day 2020 !

The last Thursday in April, New Jersey celebrates Arbor Day and despite COVID-19 and social distancing, this year is no different.  2020 marks the 29th consecutive year the Borough has been awarded the Tree City USA designation, this award speaks volumes to the efforts the Borough has made to support its trees.  Although, we are all practicing social distancing, the celebration of the trees continues on!

Ben Day is updating the Borough website with a note about Arbor Day 2020.

Deane Porter kindergarten teacher Brooke Huff coordinated a Virtual celebration with the students and Shade Tree Commission this year. My son Cooper and I made a short video about Arbor Day and the importance of trees.  It was shown online to the kindergartners and a fun educational movie was also shown.  Additionally, a list of fun activities students can do at home.

Burke Honnold will be planting a ceremonial tree on campus today.  Seedlings will be distributed to the students when the NJ State Nursery reopens. The school will set up a drive thru pick up station at Deane Porter for students to claim their tree.

A few updates since our last meeting:

  • We have provided the Rumson School District with a contractor’s proposal to move and replant the trees on campus affected by the school renovation and pond dredging.

  • We are assisting Forrestdale school in the selection and planting of apple trees in the school garden.

  • Bill Beattie has been conducting field reconnaissance and communicating with Dave Mark’s concerning this year's Fall planting project

  • We have made progress on the tree planting requirements for new construction.  At Dave’s request, Bill Beattie and I made suggestions for street trees for several new homes nearing completion.

  • A complete list of Suggested Street Trees for the Borough is nearly complete and will be available on the STC website.  A companion article on tree placement “Right tree, Right place” will also be included.

  • Burke and I attended an all-day arboricultureseminar at Frelinghuysen Arboretum in March, this fulfills the STC’s CEU requirements for the year.

  • Rally for the River has been rescheduled to October 3rd.  The STC will have a table, the Environmental Commission and DPW will also have one.

Have a great day!

Warmest regards,

Stephen Barrett
