IMPORTANT CHANGES TO RUMSON RECYCLING
EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1, 2009

Household Batteries:
Rumson will no longer collect batteries for recycling. Because of improved manufacturing techniques, most commmon household batteries now have little or no toxic content and it is now OK to throw them out with the trash. Also effective October 15, the Monmouth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will stop accepting household batteries.

"Button" Batteries:
These batteries still contain significant amounts of mercury and should still be recycled. The Monmouth County Household Hazardous Waste Facility (MCHHWF) will accept the small "button batteries" used in watches, calculators and specialty toys and games. Please call the MCHHWF at 732-922-2234 for more information.

Rechargeable Batteries:
should still be recycled. The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), an industry-sponsored group, will accept rechargeable household batteries in special collection boxes provided at numerous retail outlets such as Radio Shack. Visit www.rbrc.org for more information.

Fluorescent Light Tubes AND CFLs:
The Borough cannot collect fluorescent light tubes or compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). You may take CFLs to Home Depot for recycling. Small quantities of unbroken fluorescent tubes may be taken to the MCHHWF (by appointment) for recycling.

TV Sets:
TV sets and computers must now be recycled as part of a scheduled Wednesday bulk pickup. Please call the Department of Public Works at 732-842-8941 to schedule a bulk pickup. Each household is allowed TWO bulk pickups per calendar year.

Hazardous Waste

The Borough is prohibited from involvement in the collection of hazardous waste.

Residents are solely responsible for the disposal of:

  • Paint
  • Herbicides / Pesticides
  • Oil / Gas
  • Solvents
  • Auto Batteries
  • Chemicals

Disposal Information:

Monmouth County has a permanent Household Hazardous Waste Facility open Tuesday— Saturday of each week; call the County at 732-922-2234 to schedule an appointment for you to take your hazardous waste or to receive more information on the program.

Construction Debris

The Borough does not pick up construction debris. All construction debris, whether by contractor or homeowner must be disposed of at homeowner’s expense.

Building permits require disposal arrangements to be listed with the Building Department.

Bulk Clean Up—Wednesdays only

Collection at curbside by appointment only. No bulk clean-ups are scheduled during December due to heavy leaf collection.

Call 732-842-3300 daily 7:30am-4:00pm to schedule your pick up in advance

You are allowed two (2) bulk pick ups per year. There is a limit of 5 cubic yards per pick up.

One additional bulk clean-up is allowed when moving in/out of a residence. Move-in/out clanups are also done on Wednesdays. All of the same rules apply except you MAY put cardboard out for these pickups, however, it must be separated from the other items.

Please have all items at curbside no sooner than one day prior to scheduled Wednesday pick up; violation will require removal by homeowner; DO NOT bring any bulky debris to the recycling drop off.

   No Construction Materials

   No Concrete / Asphalt

   No Household Hazardous Waste

   No Recyclables

   No Propane Tanks

   No Fuel Containers
