CREW

Rumson and Fair Haven students (boys and girls) in grades 9-12 will now have the opportunity to join almost 3000 area teens currently competing in the one of the fastest growing sports in New Jersey and the United States.

The new rowing program will be sponsored by Rumson Recreation. Interested students should reply to the Supervisor of Parks and Recreation Director John Hird @ (732) 530-6607 or jhird@rumsonnj.gov.  Please provide your name, address, telephone number, grade and email address.

The goals of this program are to provide high school students from Rumson and Fair Haven the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of rowing and to develop a team for scholastic level competition beginning spring 2007.  Rowing is now at 150 colleges and universities in the United States.

The program christened its first racing shell in a ceremony at Rumson’s Bingham Hall on Saturday, November 11, 2006. Mayor John Ekdahl and other Borough dignitaries were on hand for the landmark event. The boat was christened in honor of esteemed community leader, Harry Barbee.

The Empacher racing shell was donated by Dan and Linda Edwards of Rumson. Mr. Edwards is a life-long oarsman who has coached successful high school and college rowing programs on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. Rumson’s first boat has a notable racing record which includes carrying the U.S. Team to victory at the World Rowing Championships at Nottingham, England.

The rowing program has received a tremendous amount of interest since first introduced to the community at a meeting in September. More than 40 adults and 46 potential high school age rowers attended. The vision for the program is to create an exceptional self-sustaining scholastic and community rowing program. Rumson's location, and the determination and spirit of our high school students is a great combination. Rowing is a great opportunity for everyone and the ultimate walk-on sport. With almost 40 high school rowing teams New Jersey, and college scholarship opportunities, rowing is among the fastest growing sports in the U.S.
