Welcome to the Borough of Rumson Historic Preservation Commission website!
The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) launched this website in 2015 and has continuously been updating the content.
Our inventory of properties over one hundred years old continues to grow and is updated annually. The website continues to allow users to either use Block/Lot numbers or a street address to locate a property. Users can click on the Find a Property button on the left side of the page to search for properties included in the inventory. Each property includes a description, architectural style, year built and if known, the architect or other significant facts.
The Commission and the Borough of Rumson both feel strongly that those involved in preserving our unique architectural resources are important to our Community. The annual HPC Awards Program recognizes those in our community that embody the spirit of Historic Preservation. To learn more about the Awards Program please click on the Awards Program button.
The Historic Preservation Commission has also launched a Plaque Program that is available to all residents whose property is listed in the inventory on this website. Properties listed in the inventory are over one hundred years old. Visit the Find-a-Property page to confirm if a property is included in the inventory. Owners wishing to purchase a plaque for their property can download the Plaque Application form here.
The virtual tours on this site have been enhanced to now include both narrated and slide show versions. Many of the homes built in the mid to late 1800’s and early 1900’s are a part of the significant properties still in existence today in what was known as Oceanic. They can be viewed in the Oceanic Tour. The Architectural Tour is comprised of existing structures that demonstrate the various architectural styles found in Rumson.
The website also contains many interesting articles written about Rumson, its parks, estates and past residents. There are in-depth articles on the history of Rumson as well as current news articles on historic Rumson and nearby towns.
The Commission and I hope that you find the enhancements and new information on the website helpful and of interest. Please feel free to submit comments or questions using our email address HPC@rumsonnj.gov.
