Borough Council Honors Former Police Chief Scott Paterson

Mayor Joseph K. Hemphill and Rumson Borough Council honored former Rumson Police Chief Scott Paterson at the September 19, 2023 Borough Council Meeting at Rumson Borough Hall.

Joined by friends, family, the Monmouth County Chief, Monmouth County Prosecutors Office, Monmouth County Chiefs Association and Rumson Police Department, Rumson Borough Council motioned to change the order of business to recognize Paterson at the start of the meeting.

Following speeches by Mayor Hemphill, Monmouth County Chiefs Association Chief Michael P. Kelly, Monmouth County Prosecutors Office Chief of Detectives John G. McCabe, and Rumson Chief of Police Jeffrey Nixon, Paterson thanked all in attendance for their support and thanked all residents of The Borough of Rumson for working with him throughout his 30 plus year career as a member of the Rumson Police Department.

The Fair Haven resident joined the Rumson Police Department as a Patrolman in 1993 and was named a Senior Patrolman in 1998. In September of 2001, Paterson was named Sergeant where he began to sharpen his leadership skills by taking on a variety of responsibilities in a supervisory role. Just five years later, Paterson was named Lieutenant in August of 2006.

Following the retirement of former Rumson Police Chief Tobias’s retirement, Paterson, as he had done in the past, stepped up to ensure a stable transition of leadership, taking the role of Acting Chief of Police from October 2012 through the end of that same year. The Borough of Rumson, it was the honor of the Rumson Borough Council to name Scott to the position of Chief of Police in January of 2013 until his recent retirement this summer.

Scott, in the purest form of the phase: Thank you. Thank you for all you did as an active member of our Community. Thank you for all you did to help foster and grow the Rumson Police Department. Thank you for all you have done to keep our community safe.

And please, do not be a stranger.

You will always have a home here in the Borough of Rumson.

- Rumson Mayor Joseph K. Hemphill
