  • JUNIOR GREEN TEAM

acc2b45c-3031-4cb1-85f0-8a5f158cccf2 < Back JUNIOR GREEN TEAM The Rumson Junior Green Team was formed in 2020 to create an avenue for high school aged kids and young adults to work with the Rumson Environmental Commission as well as the Mayor and Borough Council of Rumson to help our community become more sustainable. The Junior Green Team has a unique perspective on how sustainable practices affect our community and how younger people in particular can be a part of a transition to sustainable practices. A perfect example is the multifaceted anti-idling project. The Team conducted detailed research on the effects of idling in our community, identified where idling is most likely to occur and worked with the Environmental Commission to create an Action Plan to address the issue. The team created a written report with a detailed map of where idling occurs most frequently, requested signs for those locations, proposed the reprinting of educational bookmarks to hand out at the more busy locations and collaborated with the Environmental Commission to propose a No Idling Resolution that would codify the state mandate in our municipal code. Please email info.rumson.environmental@gmail.com with any questions about the Rumson Junior Green Team. TENNIS BALL RECYCLING PILOT PROGRAM The Rumson Junior Green Team celebrated Earth Day 2022 by launching a tennis ball recycling pilot program at the Victory Park tennis courts. The program was conceived by Junior Green Team member, Reed Hall, who is a life-long tennis player. “Unlike soccer balls or basketballs that can easily be pumped back up and reused, tennis balls are usually thrown away after a couple of uses,” explains Hall “and a tennis ball takes 400 years to decompose”. Through his efforts, the program expanded from Rumson's Recreation Department to include two high schools (RFH and Ranney), as well as tennis professionals at Spring Lake Recreation Department and Spring Lake Bath & Tennis Club. By summer’s end, Hall had collected nearly 2,000 tennis balls which will be recycled into new sports courts, horse footing, or re-pressurized and provided to underprivileged tennis programs. RUMSON JUNIOR GREEN TEAM SUSTAINABLE BRANDS INITIATIVE (SBI): Each decision you make throughout your day has an impact on our environment. By choosing products that use less packaging, less harmful chemicals or less negative production techniques; you can do your part to protect our natural resources and keep our ecosystem in balance. The Rumson Junior Green Team has created a list of Sustainable Brands to help facilitate that process. This list is ever evolving so please send any information on sustainable brands you might know about to info.rumson.environmental@gmail.com or erin.kenney7@gmail.com and we will research products and add to our list. • About Us | My Site

< Back About Us Welcome to the home of the Rumson Shade Tree Commission! Goals and Objectives Introduce species of trees and shrubbery that will provide for long term coverage of public lands, parks and recreation areas, while at the same time allowing for diversity of color in the three temperate seasons enjoyed by this community as a pedestrian based center. Establish an ongoing maintenance program for the trees along Borough rights-of-way to include county maintenance procedures on County streets to reduce liability to the Borough and enhance the quality of life for residents. Revise current ordinances and develop new tree ordinances that define responsibility for maintenance, removal and replacement. Educate the public about trees and their importance to the entire community. Expand the training opportunities available to Shade Tree Commission members and Borough employees. Coordinate Shade Tree Commission activities with public and private organizations. Mission The mission of the Rumson Shade Tree Commission is to maintain a healthy, safe and sustainable shade tree resource that will provide aesthetic, economic, ecological, environmental and health benefits to the Rumson community and its residents. This will be accomplished by promoting the conservation and stewardship of trees and advising borough officials and residents regarding the selection, planting and maintenance of our trees. The Rumson Shade Tree Commission was formally established in 1962. This advisory board strives to help Rumson become more proactive in its approach to tree care issues. It is a goal of the Shade Tree Commission to foster a cooperative environment between the local, county and state agencies for the betterment of Rumson’s tree resource and therefore its residents and visitors. These efforts have proven successful in the borough being recognized as a Tree City USA for 29 consecutive years. Since its creation, Rumson has been a strategic riverside community with most of its original tree resources contained in native Oak and Beech forests. Its very first residents embraced the importance of trees and planted many other diverse species. Today, the borough is over 90% developed, and the majority of the tree resources lie on private property. In 2019, a resident’s magnificent 250 year old Ginkgo tree was crowned the NJ State Champion. As for the public tree resource, it mainly consists of 12 different tree species in the right of way along our roadways. It is the intent of the Shade Tree Commission to establish goals and initiate objectives that will protect and enhance the tree resource of Rumson through a program of planting and preservation that will benefit present and future generations of the community. The Commission also serves as a resource to residents and welcomes the opportunity to advise in tree related matters. • LAWN AND GARDEN CARE

b44bb2c4-7c75-4b15-a9c4-29c4159bb12b < Back LAWN AND GARDEN CARE Grass clippings are a natural fertilizer for your lawn. Not only do clippings have a heavy moisture content, which adds water to your turf, but they decompose quickly and provide nutrients that will nourish the soil and root system. Once established, you only need to fertilize your lawn in the fall if you “cut it and leave it!” According to Rutgers Cooperative Research Extension “fertilizing your lawn late in the season (September through November) the previous year reduces or eliminates the need for fertilizer in the spring, reduces frequency of mowing, and improves drought resistance.” Fertilizing in the fall allows the roots system to establish while spring fertilizing promotes top growth, which requires more frequent mowing and can actually stunt root growth. Be careful not to fertilize your lawn if heavy rain is in the forecast. Instead of soaking into the soil where it can nourish your lawn, the fertilizer is likely to simply wash away with the stormwater and find its way to local waters causing algae blooms and leading to proliferation of jelly fish. Maintaining a mowing height of 2½ to 3½ inches will help increase drought resistance and will decrease insects and disease damage. Turf that is kept at a height of 2 inches or less decreases drought and heat resistance and increases the incidence of insect and disease damage as well as weed invasion. (“Your Lawn and its Care”, Rutgers Cooperative extension FS102, https://njaes.rutgers.edu/fs102/ ) SCOOP THE POOP Dogs are adorable, but their waste can wreak havoc on the environment. Pet waste is teeming with bacteria and parasites that are toxic to our ecosystem, especially our waterways. When we put the waste into the storm drains, nearby streams or even onto leaf piles, this waste finds its way to our rivers where it leads to degraded water quality and promotes algae blooms which rob the rivers of oxygen. This reduced-oxygen environment kills off fish and other aquatic animals… But jellyfish survive and even flourish with less predators and less competition for resources. WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY PET WASTE? GOOD: Pick up after your pet and dispose of it in the garbage. BETTER: Compost your pet’s waste! Purchase a septic style composter and use compostable bags or scooper to dispose of waste. Pet waste is bad for our health. Pet waste contains bacteria and parasites that infect people and pets including food poisoning, tapeworm and hookworm. These diseases can be especially dangerous for children, elderly, and people who have compromised immune systems. A dime’s worth of dog poop contains 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, such as E. coli. Some diseases that are found in pet waste can stick around in the soil for over a year and contribute to making our waterways unsafe for swimming. Pet waste can attract pests like flies, roaches and rats which also carry diseases. Decaying pet waste can release ammonia and other pollutants into the water causing algae blooms that use up oxygen and harm fish and other aquatic life. Previous Next
